Adult Nocturnal Enuresis (Adult Bedwetting)

My Story – Submitted by: Colin

Nocturnal enuresis (the clinical term for bedwetting) effects millions of youngsters worldwide. Most young people outgrow it or are able to be cured of their bedwetting using bedwetting alarms, medicines, surgery, or other methods. What many people may not be aware of is the fact that a large percentage of adults suffer from this problem also and some of these deal with the issue their entire life. It’s estimated that as many as 1 to 3% of adults have problems staying dry at night. These figures could be significantly higher and it’s likely the real figures may never be known due to the attendant stigma surrounding adult bedwetting – as Cheryl B.Gartley, president of the Simon Foundation for Continence says: “Bedwetting is a closet issue within the closet issue of incontinence.” These individuals resort to wearing some form of protection to bed such as disposable diapers, cloth diapers, or plastic pants. Unfortunately these individuals are stigmatized by the public – bedwetting seems to be viewed more negatively than other forms of incontinence, why this is so is puzzling to me.  The people suffering from bedwetting are reluctant to form relationships with people – imagine having to tell your significant other you have to wear diapers and plastic pants to bed – and are reluctant to spend the night at friends houses. Additionally business trips can be a nightmare for the adult plagued by bedwetting.Continue reading

Living with Primary Nocturnal Enuresis

My Story – Submitted by: Anonymous

I have had to adapt to my surroundings and develop an intricate “cover” for the reasons why I do things, why I have never “slept over”.

When I go camping I always have two sleeping bags. I will sleep in my own tent and will swim in a freezing river early in the morning.

I can stay awake all night at my girlfriend’s house and she never knows, but I can’t stay there for more than two nights in a row.

Walked 20 kilometres home from a party because I dozed off.

Why do I keep my bedroom door shut and get up before everyone else in a shared house? They all think I’m a clean freak because I do the washing every morning and always wash my sheets. They tell me that I shouldn’t freak out about bed bugs.

Just a few situations that primary nocturnal enuresis has put me through.Continue reading

Adult Man with Nocturnal Enuresis

My Story – Submitted by: Anonymous

I am almost 40 years old and suffer from adult nocturnal enuresis, the medical term for bedwetting. The following letter describes some of my experiences dealing with this disorder and my thoughts and feelings on the use of diapers to manage the problem. I think that some of my ideas might seem controversial, but I feel many people probably feel the same way but they’re afraid to say so. I realize this letter is long-but I feel that many of these ideas bear repeating. I thought that by sharing some of my experiences it might help people come to terms with their use of diapers to manage bedwetting.Continue reading

30 Year Old Male with Enuresis

My Story – Submitted by: Dave

Hello. I am a 30 year old male who wets the bed almost every night for as long as I can remember. I wear diapers to bed for this and have worn diapers since I was about 10. My PCP can not find a cure for me and has sent me to a urologist and they have tried many things but nothing helped. My wife has been understanding throughout our 3 yr marriage that if she wants a dry bed then I must wear a diaper to bed.Continue reading
